Drupal Forum Spam Cure
Tags:
Ever since I set up the forums on this site a few weeks ago, I have been inundated with spam posts on them. I didn't want to require users to register, or answer a question prior to posting, so I installed the spam module. It's not a bad module for a simple implementation, and actually did block the majority of spam-bot posts, but it's not very granular (and understandably so... it walks a fine line of being easy to use and still effective, and does a pretty good job), and it was sort of hit and miss and there were many posts still getting though (even after tuning the custom filters for a few weeks), so I finally found the cure:
I used Akismet with Blojsom before and it worked great and so I was very excited to see a Drupal module for it. (Akismet requires an api-key from wordpress, which is free and can be acquired here)
After one week with Akismet, my 20-30 spam-bot forum posts that were getting past the Spam module a day have turned into ZERO spam-bot posts getting past Akismet.

Hi,
I am currently working on moving my first website into my first drupal installation. My forum was being spammed like crazy and haven't & found a workable solution yet. I changed registration to administer approved for now because all the spam comes from obvious user names (a bunch of gibberish) and all the emai accounts come from ru.mail...
My main question, What is the point to these spam posts??? Its just a bunch of random links complied into one long forum post...Is someone getting paid for this crap? and if so why?
Well anyway I havent actually researched the topic myself, so maybe I can find my own answers.
Thanks for the advice I will definitely look into these modules
Some morons from overseas actually get paid for SEO... and they don't even speak a word of English. Ultimately, they get the keywords... but into a bunch of crap and link those keywords to some monkey content and BAM! You got yourself some time wasting garbage in the forums under an irrelevant container.
Best solution is, "DISABLE CREATE FORUM TOPIC FUNCTION" have ONLY VIP Members create topics. These would be people you know.
Hope this helps guys...
